About Derek

My journey into building started at home when I was fifteen years old. My father Brian is a trained Luthier and was building guitars in our home.  I had seen a few of the guitars he had built and always wanted to try my hand at this special art form.
By the end of the school year, under the guidance of my father, my first build was complete.  It was a neck-thru electric guitar with all the accoutrements a young metal-head would die for. "Axe" was certainly a fair term for the guitar.  After seeing what was possible, I was hooked. Drawing something and building it seemed to be the epitome of creativity for me.
I used the first guitar I made as part of my resume at a high-end boutique guitar builder out of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. I worked there for several years while also learning the craft of repairs from my father on the weekends. It was guitars, all day everyday. Later on, I joined my father in our family music store full-time in Kainaliu, HI; Kiernan Music.  I managed the repair department, offering minor set-ups all the way to full restorations and customizations; as well as custom guitar and ukulele builds.
Before moving to Alberta, Canada I spent nearly two years working for a non-profit foundation  building guitars and teaching others how to build guitars and ukuleles. This included teaching the trade to a handful of students in grade school as well as adults. Several high-end builds were auctioned off with the proceeds being donated to other charities in need.
Now, I invite you to be a part of the next leg of my journey; Goose Guitar Company. Serving musicians and artists with over twenty years of guitar workshop experience.

Why Goose?
Represented by the
Hawaiian Nene Goose emboldened on my instruments, that which evolved from a Canada Goose, it serves as a symbol of the connection of the two places I call home.  â€‹
